Islamically: Imaan is the statement of the tongue, belief in the heart, and actions of the limbs; It increases with Obedience to Allah and decreases with disobedience.
The Pillars of Imaan
Its pillars are six: That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and that you believe in Al-Qadar (Divine Pre-Decree) – the good of it and the bad of it is from Allah.
Statement:
The hadeeth, “The highest of them is saying La illaaha illa Allaah”
Actions:
“and the lowest of them is moving a harmful object from the road”
Belief in the Heart:
“and modesty is a branch from Eemaan”
Increases:
Allah’s saying: “Which of you has had his Faith increased by it?” (9:124) proves that Imaan increases
Decreases:
“I haven’t seen anyone more deficient in reason and religion…” (Bukharee, Muslim).
Reasons for Emaan to Increase
The reasons for Iman to increase are 4:
- Reflecting upon the creations
- Giving up Sins
- Increasing Good Deeds
- Studying Tawheed; especially, the Names and Attributes
Reasons for Emaan to Decrease
The reasons for Iman to decrease are 4:
- Not Reflecting upon the creations
- Sinning
- Not doing Good Deeds
- Not Studying Tawheed; especially, the Names and Attributes
Pillars of Imaan
There are six pillars of Iman:
- Allah
- Angles
- Books
- Messengers
- The Last Day
- Qadr: Everything which will take place; good and bad
