7. His صلى الله عليه وسلم Guidance in Dress, Eating and Drinking
His صلى الله عليه وسلم Preferred Colours
White was one of his صلى الله عليه وسلم favourite colours and he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The best of your garments are the white ones, so wear them and shroud your dead in them.”
His Clothes
He صلى الله عليه وسلم would wear that which was easy regarding his clothing, sometimes he would wear cotton or wool or sometimes linen. He صلى الله عليه وسلم always began with his right when putting on his clothes.
Moderation in Dress
Some of the Salaf said: We disliked two types of clothing, boastful expensive clothing and clothing that looked lowly and old as if to show asceticism.
Abdullah ibn Umar ھJعن الله يJرض narrated: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: If anyone wears a garment for gaining fame, Allah will clothe him in a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection and then set it ablaze in the fire. This is because he intended to be boastful with pride and arrogance, so Allah punished him for this. Ibn Umar رضي الله also narrated: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: He who trailed his garment (below his ankles) out of pride, Allah would not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.
His صلى الله عليه وسلم Food
He صلى الله عليه وسلم never used to refuse what was available nor cause burden regarding what wasn’t available, nothing from the pure good things was presented to him except that he ate it, unless it was something he personally disliked, if so He would leave it without prohibiting it from others. A’isha رضي الله عنھا said: “The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم never found fault with food. If he had inclination to eating it, he would eat; and if he disliked it, he would leave it.
How He صلى الله عليه وسلم Ate
Most of his food was placed on the ground on a place set for food. He used to eat with three fingers.
He would not eat lying down. He would say ‘bismillah’ to start eating and ‘alhamdulillah’ when finished.
After finishing his food, he would lick his fingers.
His صلى الله عليه وسلم Drink
He صلى الله عليه وسلم would drink sitting, furthermore, he disliked for a person to drink standing up unless they were unable to sit.
He would share his drink to those on his right even if the eldest were on his left.
