Concise Biography of the Prophet

34. Stages of Revelation

Study Duration
2 Min
  • 1. Good True Dreams
This was how the revelation started and A’isha عنھا الله رضي said: “the revelation came to Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم in the form of good dreams which came true like bright daylight.”
  • 2. Revealed directly to his Heart
Sometimes the Angel would come to him and reveal directly to his heart without the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم seeing him, as He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “the faithful spirit (Jibreel) blew into my heart and informed me…”
  • 3. Angel in form of a Man
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “sometimes the Angel comes to me in the shape of a man and talks to me, and I understand and remember what he says." Sometimes the companions were present during this time.
  • 4. Ringing Bell
Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Sometimes it is revealed like the ringing of a bell, this form of Inspiration is the hardest of all and then this state passes off after I have grasped what is inspired. A’isha عنھا الله رضي added: “Verily I saw the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم being inspired divinely on a very cold day and noticed the sweat dropping from his forehead (as the Inspiration was over).” Had he been on his mount it would kneel down to the ground whilst he صلى الله عليه وسلم was on it.
